about

Gavana’s new EP ”Culture Vulture” preys upon the transgressive forces of electro, hip hop and dancehall. A sonic journey bordering on the bombastic and shameless, with a cheeky twist. On the Culture Vulture EP, Gavana continues the explorations she began on her recent debut-EP ”Vicious Vibrations,” featured on Swedish National Radio (Elektroniskt i P2) and by Johanna Paulsson, one of Sweden’s main music reviewers, in Sonic:

”Music’s power over Muscle is hard to deny; it is impossible to resist the jerky rythm and quirky electronics of Gavana’s ”Vicious Vibrations.” It is as if the minimalist whipping synth classic by The Normals, ”Warm Leatherette,” went on a sunny holiday trip to the West Indies.” (Johanna Paulsson, Sonic #68, 2013)

- I explore things with my music, it may revolve around a certain state of mind, creating a collective experience on the dance floor or exposing people to new worlds. I’ve got my own ideas behind everything I do but my music is very open to the interpretations of the listeners. Says Gavana to Inga Smirnova in Södermalmsnytt (April 2013)

Gavana’s alter ego, the anthropologist Anna Gavanas, operates by means of text, whereas Gavana addresses life by means of sound as a music producer/ composer:

“Gavana says that music has influenced her writing and expression, and that it is possible to approach a topic by means of sound and thereby break free from the prison of language and categories. You can’t miss her passion for bass when she describes how its frequencies has the power to make everything vibrate, to get at your inner bodily organs.” Fredrik Borne Skans, Barometern (March 2013)

- Bass has always been the one element that gets me started. It is the most transformational auditive force there is, says Gavana to Kristofer Anderson in Swedish Underground Bible DIY (Modernista 2013)

The EP features new original tracks as well as two remixes from Gavana’s EP ”Vicious Vibrations” released in March 2013: moombahton/ trap/ rave influenced versions by Swedish electronica- and drum&bass producer Aimnbreak. With this new record, Gavana continues her mission as a driving force in the Swedish electronic music scene:

“Being a DJ, producer, remixer, music culture researcher as well as a label owner, Anna Gavanas is a mainstay of the Swedish electronic music scene. When producing, her perfect sense for musical intensity and mellowness guarantees a captivating listening experience.” (Gearjunkies, August 2012)
